I was walking home yesterday by the tent in the bushes ("the gray/red one in the middle is nestled in the bushes") when three people emerged from the tent and started screaming at each other and a man with a huge stick of some sort started beating the ground in front of the other two people (I think they were both women) and yelling at them. The week before walking home the young guy who lives in the tent on the sidewalk was in a physical and verbal altercation with an older homeless man who had just pushed over the tent guy's shopping cart of stuff. I wrote the Mayor about this burgeoning encampment but haven't heard anything back.

It is unfortunate that there seems to be an increase in homelessness in Oakland and indeed across the entire state. Being complicit in allowing these tents to occupy public space, and in this case one of the most treasured spaces in Oakland, is not the answer. A large portion of homeless suffer from mental health issues, and as the above commenter noted, can be violent. The city refuses to build proper shelters so the homeless can have an indoor refuge and access to social services, so they are forced to set up these tents. It's an issue of priorities - they are doing all they can to keep the Raiders while ignoring the homeless. If they won't provide access to shelter, the city should set aside shady spaces for these tents. It is ridiculous that there is a tent smack in the middle of one of the most utilized sidewalks in the city.

Blocked by rejections? This is a public forum and stating that OPD sent out warnings should not be blocked. Somebody needs to drop kick the tent out of the public pathway.
