There's no bike markers for the traffic sensing loops at this intersection, so I can be stuck for minutes trying to make a left turn, waiting for something large and metallic to come along and change the signal for me.

I think there's both... I don't expect the light to turn right away, but I've seen the light change right away for cars that approach while there's no traffic on the other road.
I'm betting that there's loops in the road, just based on the light behaviors I've seen! But it might just be overactive imagination plus confirmation bias at this point :D
