Reporting again about the ridiculous speeding on Mountain Rd. Not just private vehicles, but large tractor trailer trucks, dump trucks, police with no lights or sirens on, and lastly SCHOOL BUSES! Filled with children going at least 40. Out street is 25mph. I am afraid to even walk with my kids down the side walk. We had a cat turn up dead in our front yard. Clearly hit by a car. The speeding is out of control. Even with the speed reader that was placed in front of my drive way, people would go slow through it and speed up like crazy after they passed it. I yelled the speed limit to a bus driver with a bus full of kids and she gave me the "Wtf arms" taking BOTH her hands off the steering wheel traveling well over 25. I know there are other issues in town. But this is crazy. I had a friend's son get hit by a car in the center due to speeding. It's crazy. Something has to be done. The resolve to the issue the last time I reported in June, I believe, was an increase in patrol during rush hours. I haven't seen this increased presence. Neither have any of the neighbors I know and have spoken to. Also, the problem is bad at all times if the day. Not just the rush hours.

Same issue on the other side of the highway on Cook Hill Road but we don't even have sidewalks...I fear for all the people who walk on my street including myself and my kids. They did a speed monitor here a year or two back but it did not help. Its the worse right around when schools start in the morning and when school and afternoon sports end in the afternoon. School buses are included as some of the biggest offenders of the speed limit on my road.

Thank you Lindsay for reporting this. The speed reader was also installed on our (north) side of Mountain last year. I've seen the cops in the church parking lot to watch folks ignoring the light, but not on our road to watch for speeders. The response I often get from the town or WPD is "people will always speed". I'm not satisfied with that reply, and as the mom to an 8 year old who is ALWAYS outside with friends, I'm increasingly worried that he will fall victim to the speeds of these ignorant, inconsiderate drivers. I moved to this street for a reason - I THOUGHT it was a quiet, respectful neighborhood, but the biggest offenders are the neighbors themselves. More needs to be done. My signs that read "drive like your children live here" only shame the people who still have some decency into slowing down. Most go so fast though, I can't event make out the make of their car, never mind the plate number.

I agree with the above comments. Not sure what the answer is, as I have been told the police are not allowed to sit in private driveways to run radar. Maybe having a police car strategically placed on the street at different times of the day would help? It really has gotten out of hand!

I had a friend on Park Ave. that was asked by WPD if they could sit in his driveway to monitor speeders. This was years ago, but as long as the property owners are ok with it, then it should be fine. The perfect spot on our side for a cruiser to sit would be the top of Whitward Place, where there is that locked gate. Easily could set up a cruiser and a radar gun and speeders would never notice until it's too late for them. People pull into Mountain (a straight-away road), and immediately put the pedal to the metal. We also have no sidewalks on our side, but that's another issue.

Not that the speeding is/was ever acceptable, but now the risk is elevated with children waiting at their bus stops and getting dropped off after school.
I have seen more than a handful of passenger vehicles blow the stop sign at the corner of Sheffield and Mountain as well, in the morning bus pickup times (it happens all day at that stop sign).

This issue has not been resolved. There was a speed reading machine for one day. One. And that was months ago. I have not noticed any change in the speed of traffic at all. People FLY down this street. It’s dangerous. Someone is going to end up getting very hurt or worse.
