there are bike lanes running north and south in the street and on bike lane on the south side of wilson/east side of chestnut that "magically" appears about 50 years down the sidewalk. the lack of a consistent assignment to where the bike lanes are located (street, sidewalk, both...???) creates confusion for cyclists and creates a potentially hazardous environment for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.

Good point. I asked the same question about 5 yrs. ago. On-road bike lanes are added whenever a road is reconstructed (existing) or constructed (new) as the roadway usually has to be widened to accomodate the width of the bike lanes (min. 4 ft). So, eventually (within 5 yrs. per latest estimates) we'll have nice continuous bike lanes on all campus roads and no more confusion. As for the off-road paths around campus (behind Owen/ Erickson, etc.) where there are bike symbols on one side and ped. symbols on the other side these are "shared use paths" which we'll see more and more of in coming years. Sidewalks, those paths that run parrallel to roadways, are for pedestrians only and people who ride bikes on them shouldn't be which, over time, they're figuring out on their own after hitting pedestrians or other bicyclists and watching bicyclists zip by them in the bike lanes. It's an education and learning issue.
