This sign offensive for the following reasons: This sign was placed there to make a political statement and it is divisive. We have no issues in this city regarding hate crimes. Additionally, it forces citizens to be informants against other people in the community. Who decides what actions or what rhetoric is "hateful"? What happened to our First Amendment rights? If a person makes a statement that is contrary to another's political beliefs and therefore "offensive" does that make it hateful rhetoric? Lastly, the placement of this sign is horrible. It blocks one of the most beautiful and popular plantings in the Library Lane Park. Portage spends much time and dollars making our community look nice and someone decided to put an offensive and divisive sign in front of the "Canoe" bed. This is not Portage!
